From the Good Old Days
These old Shopsmith advertisements sum it
all up but in case you don’t recognize this tool
(or should I say tools)  it’s a Shopsmith, the
original multi-purpose woodworking machine.
Shopsmith has enjoyed seven decades of
success with relatively little change over most
of these years, amassed a huge almost cult
like following, and an owner base of over 1
million strong. .

If you’re not familiar with the Shopsmith MKV  it
has always been  a 10” Table Saw, a Lathe
with 34” between centers, a 12” Disc Sander,
a 16½” Drill Press,and a phenomenal
horizontal boring machine. And it all fits into a
2ft X 6Ft foot area in the shop, shed, or garage.
As a full line tool company a wide selection of
additional special purpose tools have evolved
over the years. Bandsaw, beltsander,
thickness planer, jointer, etc
1949 Popular Mechanics ad...It all started with
what was called the 10ER. There are still many
many of these original machines being used
today by second and third generation owners.
Even "The Beav" had a shopsmith

"What is the Power Pro? Simply put, this is a
headstock powered with a DVR, digital variable
reluctance motor, whose performance goes
beyond that of old fashioned 20th century DC and
AC motors."

"While the old Shopsmith headstock achieved a
useful 7 to 1 speed variation, using variable pitch
pulleys known more commonly as a reeves drive,
the  PowerPro has a 40 to 1 speed range, 250 to
10,000 rpm, providing full torque throughout. The
computer/controller also has a mode that can
assist in selecting the proper speed for a
particular operation. The computer senses the
load, and automatically provides the necessary
torque. The smooth and quiet operation is
impressive. Placing a cup of coffee on the table
reveals nary a ripple, even at 10,000 rpm."

Old School Ingenuity

Seven Decades of Woodworking Evolution
It stores a warehouse of ideal speed settings. If
you don’t know what setting you need for a given
operation, you simply choose the operation from
the extensive list and the machine display
supplies you with the correct setting.
The PowerPro’s ability to sense torque makes it
possible to do table saw ripping equal to any
cabinet saw. Additionally, the variable speed
feature has made it possible  to rip and crosscut
hardwoods without getting burn marks. At 250
rpm in lathe mode,  turn heavy stock, up to 16”
diameter. As a drill press, the PowerPro provides
the necessary power to drill with large diameter
forstner bits with ease. At 10,000 rpm, it can spin
larger diameter shaper and router bits with more
power than available with traditional routers. This
upgrade gives MKV owners the increased power
and capability they have always asked for.

Larry the woodworker
called his boss and said:
"Hey, boss I'm not coming
to work today, I'm really
sick, I got a headache, a
stomach ache, my leg
hurts, I just can't make it
in."
The boss says: "Larry I
really need you today.
When I feel sick like that I
go to my wife and tell her
to give me sex. That
makes me feel better and
I can go to work. You
should give it a try."
Two hours later Larry the
woodworker calls again:
"Boss, I did what you said
and I feel great, I'll be in
right away. By the way, you
sure got a nice house."
